Who doesn’t love a good party? The onus is on the host to set up the right ambience and décor for a great party. If you are playing host, here are some interesting ways to do up your home before the guests roll in for some fun.
There are a few basics that you will need to get done before actually making décor changes to your home. Is there a theme to your party? What is the age group that you will be having over? Where are you having the party—indoors, outdoors or a bit of both? Once these aspects are figured out, you can go about getting your home done up.
Terrace/garden party: If you live in a place where weather is great, then you will want to make the most of it. The first thing you need to look into is how much space you have to accommodate guests in your garden or on the terrace. You need to remember that your guests will need seats, to manoeuvre around, find space to place their drinks and snacks and not feel crowded.
Make place by moving all your plants to the periphery of your terrace or garden. Keep the central area free for people to mingle. Have all your seats loosely arranged closer to the plants. String some white rice bulb lights through your plants to add to the ambience for an evening party. During the day time, make the best use of your ornamentals plants by placing them in clear viewing line for your guests. Perhaps a collection of flowering pots in the centre or a series of hanging pots overhead.
Celebrating a festival: We have scores of festivals in India and almost every one of them has a theme of its own. This makes the décor easier to handle. Whether you plan to have the party indoors or out, it would be great to bring in motifs that are related to the festival. Include these in all the obvious places in your home—bookshelves, curtain rods, side tables and the like.
Try and colour coordinate your décor to match that of the festival. You can do this with flowers, streamers, decoration pieces and more. Fill out dull corners with little décor elements that symbolise the festival. Doing this gives your guests a great photo opportunity as well. Use the edges of your staircase as well to put up small-sized festive décor. Though you may want to be careful with diyas, especially if you have children and pets at home.
The little ones: With any party, it would be a good idea to keep something ready for your little guests. Organising a small play area, or dedicating a room to them would ensure that they are not in harm’s way and have a good time.
Smell right: Make your home smell lovely with strategically placed perfumed candles. These can be in the foyer, around your plants, in your bathrooms or on staircases. It adds to the relaxing atmosphere of a great party.
Combine these ideas with other innovations that go with your home and you are sure to have a great space to entertain your guests.
