India is slowly catching up with the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) culture. Currently it is restricted to the very artistic décor side of things. So you will see more of decorative paintings, sculptures and artwork than you will see tables, chairs and bed frames being made. Nevertheless we are getting there. So if you want to get into some DIY projects of your own, an interesting way to make a beginning is with the curtains in your home.

The first thing you will need is material. Now here are some ways to go about it.

• If you already have sheer, plain, or solid coloured curtains, you can consider giving them a facelift. Bring your painting skills to the fore and use some fabric paints to give them a whole new look. If you have a theme going through the décor in your home, you can use that as inspiration for designs. Look online to find countless designs that you can print and use as stencils or backgrounds to paint with.
• Another way to work with materials is to combine two—take an old solid colour curtain and use strips from another, which has bold prints, to create something new. You can choose to create borders or go down the length of the curtain.
• A similar, yet more ethnic version of this, is to repurpose old sarees into curtains. This works especially well during the festive season, or when you want your home to wear a traditional look for an event in the family. It is also the simplest means of getting something unique, without too much of an effort involved in the process.

Now if you would rather get more hands-on with your curtain making, and you are familiar with using a machine, here is what you can consider.

• Invest in basic material to work with—for your children’s room, you can create patchwork curtains from the clothes that your child has outgrown. Cut out the designed portions of these little tees and pants and sew them onto curtains to give them a unique look. In fact, for that feel of nostalgia, you can even have these installed in your own bedroom.
• You could also consider adding elements of design that you have made yourself, to existing curtains. Consider handmade tassels or crocheted edging. There are so many designs you can hand create.
• Curtains can also be enhanced with cords that are handmade—this can help you have a unique way in which to draw your curtains back and hold them in place.
