End of the year is when we all tend to take stock of everything – our lives, careers, studies, fitness goals. Time also to look around your house and take stock of all the stuff you’ve accumulated during the year. If you don’t clear some of that out, where will you put the stuff you’re going to buy in the new year, right?
Jokes aside, this might be a good time to do some decluttering in the house and better organise your spaces. Even if you aren’t throwing Christmas or New Year parties, your future self will thank you for the freshness in the house.
Your first step would be to identify the clutter hotspots. The coffee table in the living room, the work desk in the corner, that one chair in the bedroom that has turned into a catch-all. A de-cluttered space is a happy space. Not only does it offer visual relief, it brings a sense of calm to the entire household.
Sort your things into piles of things to keep, things to donate, things to throw away, and things to be stored. This works for everything from clothes to kitchen utensils to travel souvenirs. For instance, not every souvenir or knick-knack has to be on display. Chose your favourites and display those, while storing the rest away in a box. Better still, have a theme every month and change your display accordingly.
If you have a lot of books, consider donating some to your local library. Hoarding all your kids’ old toys? Give them away to family and friends who have little ones. Remember to get rid of old medication, skincare products and makeup. The rule of thumb for clothes is, if you haven’t used it in the last six months, it’s best you give it away.
Put some money into getting yourself some storage options. Large boxes that can be stowed away under the cot, smaller ones that fit into the topmost (and rarely used) shelves, small desk organisers that can contain the clutter of your work desk. Get yourself one of those colourful seats that have storage inside them – it would be ideal to dump things into, while doubling up as a seat in the corner.
Once you are done clearing the clutter, bring a spot of freshness in with a potted plant and some candles. You’re now ready to ring in the new year!
