It’s the month of Valentines. That one time of the year when everything takes on the colour of roses; and wine bottle sales and candle-light dinner reservations skyrocket. Valentine’s Day is almost a universal celebration of love, though it has received its fair bit of flack in the country for being “Western” and therefore not right. But we are not here to argue that, because at the end of the day, love is a universal feeling and there can be no wrong in expressing it, one way or the other.
Rather than fixate on Valentine’s Day being only for lovers, one should see that love is for family as well. Valentine’s Day could be a day when we take a break from our hectic lives and actually acknowledge all those important to us. Between all those work deadlines and home assignments and house management, we often miss out on something as simple as having a meal together. This Valentine’s Day would be a lovely way to reaffirm the love you have for your family by simply spending time with them.
Start off with a breakfast that the family cooks together and then indulges in together. If you would rather sleep in late, you could make that a brunch. (Yes, Valentine’s Day is on a week day, but you could always designate the weekend for this celebration!). Make a mix of everyone’s favorites and lay it out on the table. Making a picnic of it on the large balcony or even on your private terrace would be a great idea. Spend the afternoon watching a family friendly movie. Take time out to have one on one conversations with each member of the family. See how they are doing and share in their ups and downs. End the day on a quiet note, with a family dinner at a favourite restaurant or even order in some family favorites.
And if you would like to make things extra special, you could have a tiny gift waiting for each one of the family on their pillows before they turn in for the night. The special day will be cherished all the more.
It is easy to deride the celebration of a day as being not a part of our culture. But one thing we all face is a complete lack of time to acknowledge our love for our family and loved ones. If you have a day designated for it, perhaps you can bring it into your schedule and enjoy some fun with the family. The feeling of rejuvenation is something that will buoy you for a long while to come.
