It is very easy to slip into a rut as the year goes by. The monotony of everyday routine can make you go slack after a while and this in turn can lead to your schedules and deadlines going haywire. It’s very easy for things to go south from there and this is something that can happen to anyone—students, working folk, homemakers, anybody.
If you are looking to make a change in this New Year, take heart knowing that it is not something drastic that you have to do. Simple changes and easy checklists will help you get into a routine. And these are tips that anybody can use to get their lives back on track.
Don’t underestimate the usefulness of a checklist: Keep checklists handy for just about any job that you have in mind—from grocery lists, to study schedules, to appointments etc. Thanks to smart devices, you can also program these into your phone and schedule regular alarms to remind you and to get the work done.
Pace yourself for the Day: If there is one thing we all tend to do is that we schedule too many things to do in one day. Remember that you are only one person and there is just so much that you can do. Prioritize your work for the day and always list it out. Give yourself a buffer time to start and end a particular task. Also give yourself leeway on every work day for the unexpected—you never know when you have a surprise test, or an unexpectedly long meeting or sudden guests at home that will throw your to-do list for a toss. Schedule one or two extra tasks per day for when you may find time to complete them as well.
Prep in advance: Small things such as picking your clothes and ironing them the previous day, packing your bag, making a menu plan for the week, purchasing groceries for the week, booking tickets to a show well in advance, all of these can help shave off a few minutes per task and these all work up to a sizable amount of time that you can save. There are so many small things you can do this way.
Give yourself a break: There are times when no amount of planning can ease the pressure for you and you will find yourself really tired. Those are the days when you need to take a break from it all and you should not hesitate to do so. Take those breaks, relax—it is such free time that will energize you to get back to the routines.
