Nuclear families are the reality of today’s world. Every second household you come across comprises a family of working parents and one or two kids. Time is of utmost importance in such households as both the parents have their professional schedules to manage and need to attend to the household chores after work hours. This is where the children can help! Encourage them to participate in household works (depending on their age) so that it eases a little pressure off the parents. This gives more productive bonding time with your kids, and also helps them to become more independent. Here are some ways in which you can involve children in the easy and successful managing of the home:
One Task at a Time: Once the decision to let kids help out with household chores has been taken, you must take one step, one task at a time. Start with one chore or task—cleaning their rooms or laying the dinner table or folding laundry. Focus on one task and ensure that they complete that on time and in a proper manner. This will give them enthusiasm and confidence to do more chores.
Talk with Your Child: It is important to talk and discuss with the child before assigning them chores. You must know how they feel about the new responsibility and also you should tell them the reasons for involving them in home management. Preferably, start with the tasks they like and then move on to more serious tasks. Doing so ensures that the child will take up tasks willingly and not under any pressure.
Make a List of Tasks: Before assigning the tasks, make a list of which chores your child is capable of doing. The tasks given out must be according to their age and capabilities. They should be able to fulfill the chores without too much strain and without spending all day on it. They should have sufficient study and play time.
Encourage your child: Now that you have handed out tasks to the kids, it is important to keep them motivated so that they can complete the tasks successfully. Encourage your children while they are doing the tasks, appreciate their efforts and express your happiness. This will keep them happy and enthusiastic to help more.
Reward your children: On particularly good days, when they put in extra efforts, you could even reward them for completing the tasks to the best of their abilities. This will be a great motivating factor for them and also give a happy-feel.
PS: Do not reward them after every small task as then they will do tasks only for rewards.
Getting your children to contribute to household chores is a step in the right direction. Not only will they learn to take up responsibilities, it will also contribute in their growth as self-reliant, hardworking citizens. The family will also bond better over time spent completing household tasks.
