Cool Your Home in Simple Ways This Summer
Posted on May 22,2017 | By admin2
The summers are here and they are leaving us sizzling away! Since we can’t ask the Sun to tone things down, what we can do is make a few changes and additions to our home that will help make summer more bearable. Here are some tips to help you:
Start off with the décor of your home. Get down to bare minimum. In summers, strip your home of heavy carpets and drapes. Put up light, lacey curtains that will bring in the light, but keep the heat at bay. Instead of carpets, get bright throw pillows and strew them around instead.
Bring in water-based plants around your home. Rather than bringing in pots, get yourself a few tall glass or plastic vases and fill them with flowering plants. Place this in the dull corners of your home, on corner tables, at the corner of your staircase landing as well. This will brighten up your home and will give you a visually cooling image to look at.
If you have a living room or a balcony that faces the sun for a majority of the day, thus becoming inaccessible during summers, you can consider bringing in rattan drapes to cut down on the heat. These can easily be installed to drape down over your balcony. These will keep the heat away but will filter in light as well as fresh air and allow it in. It’s a perfect way to make your balcony more accessible.
If you live below the terrace and have to deal with intense heat in the evenings, then one way to ease things up will be to head to the terrace at around 4PM and throw around a bucket of water. This tends to cool the terrace down. Alternately, if you can convince your building’s association, you can even have a tile roof installed to cut down on the heat that your terrace slab absorbs.
Have all your electrical gadgets in the house serviced and in perfect working condition. Appliances like microwaves, fridges, ACs and ovens tend to suck in a great amount of power and spit out immense heat if they are not in optimal working condition. This will help cool down your home a bit as well.
These are just some of the ways in which you can keep your home cool in summer. Of course, each home is different and will have to be dealt with in a unique way, but these tips should give you a good idea of what to plan for. So go ahead, get your home summer smart this year.
